Once the capital of the Glaniques, one of the peoples of ancient Provence, Glanum is now a major archaeological site. The town became Hellenised as a result of contact with Marseille, and under Roman influence was endowed with grandiose public monuments, before disappearing around 270, the victim of barbarian invasions. Excavations have brought to light a residential area with a central courtyard lined with columns, streets with sewers, mosaics, thermal baths and the forum, all of which bear witness to a certain refinement.
