Beschrijving

In the middle of the 13th century, a Guillemite priory was built in Marienthal, near Haguenau. Its church soon became the focus of a pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Around 1500, this primitive sanctuary was replaced by a Gothic church. From 1720 to 1725, Stanislas Leczinski, the deposed King of Poland, and his daughter Maria came to Marienthal several times a year, before Marie Leczinska became Queen of France through her marriage to Louis XV.
In 1863, Charles Morin, the architect for the town of Haguenau, carried out extension work to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims. Today, the Marienthal Basilica remains a place of welcome (see dedicated website).
