A powerful fortress, a Romanesque abbey and then a Gothic cathedral, Maillezais has shone for centuries in religious, economic and artistic terms.
Overlooking the canals dug by the monks to drain the Gulf of the Pictons, Maillezais stands on an island overlooking the Marais Poitevin, a splendid natural environment that is unique in France.
There's plenty to see and do all year round!

Rabelais, the extraordinary
François Rabelais, guest of Maillezais Abbey, drew his inspiration from the site to set the scene for Gargantua and Pantagruel alongside Mélusine and Geoffroy de Lusignan.
From 9 July to 25 August - 11.45am, 4.15pm
The marsh sailor
Discover the history of the Poitevin marshes from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Identify the function of the different areas: wet marsh, dry marsh and Aiguillon Bay. An immersive and entertaining show.

Family Sundays: In search of the relics of St Rigomer. 4-7 years, 8-12 years
The relics of Saint Rigomer have disappeared! Pierre, the new novice monk with a bit of a temper, has taken advantage of the morning meeting of the elders in the chapter house to hide them.
Set off in search of them! But be careful, Pierre has set up a series of tests that you'll have to face. Only the most deserving will be allowed near these precious relics!

The Voûtes Célestes festival is a not-to-be-missed classical music event in Sud-Vendée.
In the exceptional setting of the abbeys of Maillezais and Nieul-sur-l'Autise, the festival offers an original programme combining prestige, audacity and discovery, combining improvised music and contemporary creations.
