Discover the history of the Gallo-Roman mosaic at Migennes. Discovered on the Montois site, it has a total surface area of 210 m². Polychrome and geometric, a rare art form at the time, it is one of the largest in Northern Gaul. A restored 6 m² fragment adorns one of the walls of the Migennois Tourist Office, offering an uninterrupted view of this ancient culture.
A number of clues suggest that the Gallo-Roman "Villa" at Migennes was dedicated to Christian worship.
Built during the troubled times of the barbarian invasions, this villa was nevertheless constructed using noble materials, with no obvious concern for cost. But why bother? Among the 138 different coins found on the site, there were a very large number of counterfeit coins. It's a safe bet that fervent Catholics and counterfeiters got on well together, and that as well as a church, this villa housed a clandestine counterfeiting workshop.
